Three sisters in their 80s and 90s were found dead Saturday in a house in Tokyo apparently due to heat stroke or heat exhaustion, police said.

The three lived together in the house with an air-conditioner in Tokyo's Itabashi Ward, but they told relatives they all hated using it, police said.

When police found them dead in the house Saturday morning, the room temperature was over 30 C and most of windows were closed, with no sign that they had been using the air-conditioner, police said.

The three — Naoko Kuratsu, 90, Toki Yuasa, 86, and Tomo Sakamoto, 82 — died three or four days ago, according to the police.

The Tokyo metropolitan area recorded high temperatures topping 35 C for seven consecutive days through Friday.
