The eldest son of late Chinese reformer Hu Yaobang is making arrangements to visit Japan later this month, a source familiar with Japan-China relations said Thursday.

The trip planned by Hu Deping, who is close to President Xi Jinping, would be to "explore the possibility of improving Japan's relations with China by getting in touch with Japanese politicians and civilians," the source said.

A former member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Hu is arranging to meet with former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, who fostered close ties with Hu's father, a former general secretary of the Communist Party, the source said.

He is also hoping to meet with former Prime Ministers Yasuo Fukuda, Yukio Hatoyama and Tomiichi Murayama, as well as leading figures in business circles, the source said.
