Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will visit Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest freestanding communications tower and Tokyo's newest tourist attraction, on Thursday ahead of the complex's grand opening in late May, the Imperial Household Agency said Tuesday.

The Imperial Couple is scheduled to go up to the higher of the tower's two observation decks, which is roughly 450 meters above the ground, and be briefed on the 634-meter tower during their roughly 20-minute visit.
