A 25-member government panel on national energy policy is deeply divided over the future of nuclear power, according to papers released by the panel.

Five of the 18 members to present their views on a desirable energy mix for 2030 said nuclear power should be abolished by then, while one said it should account for no more than 10 percent of Japan's total energy supply.

Nine backed a target between 15 and 35 percent, and three commented without specifying numbers, the papers released Wednesday showed.

Most said Japan should up its reliance on renewable energy faster than previously advised under a plan adopted before the Fukushima nuclear crisis.
