A fisheries training school in Ehime Prefecture held a memorial service Friday to mark the 11th anniversary of a collision between its training boat and a U.S. nuclear submarine that killed nine people off Hawaii.

Participants in the ceremony at Uwajima Fisheries High School, including students and relatives of the victims, observed a moment of silence at 8:43 a.m. — the exact moment the submarine collided with and sank the Ehime Maru.

The accident occurred Feb. 9, 2001, while the 6,080-ton USS Greeneville was performing a rapid-surfacing drill off Oahu.
