Emperor Akihito will resume his official duties Tuesday after spending 19 days in the hospital with bronchial pneumonia, the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.
The 77-year-old Emperor, who was discharged last Thursday, will attend a memorial service in Tokyo, along with Empress Michiko, for firefighters who died responding to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. They are expected to lay flowers at the ceremony, the agency said.
