Japan Post Holdings Co. said its group net profit for April-September increased 39.7 percent from a year earlier to ¥230.7 billion on personnel and other cost cuts, even though revenue fell 4.9 percent to ¥8.36 trillion.

Pretax profit increased 9.6 percent to ¥531.8 billion during the first half of this business year.

All Japan Post group companies reduced bonus payments, contributing to expanding the pretax profit by ¥59 billion. Without the bonus cut, the half-year profit would have fallen by ¥12.5 billion.

Among the group companies, Japan Post Service Co. saw a 5.5 percent drop in mail volume and posted a net loss of ¥44.3 billion, an improvement of ¥15 billion from a year earlier.
