Last weekend's midnight broadcast of the Asian Cup soccer final in Qatar, fetched an average TV viewer rating of 33.1 percent in the Tokyo area and 33.5 percent in Osaka, a rating agency said Monday.

Viewership temporarily peaked at 37.5 percent in the Tokyo area and 39.2 percent in the Osaka area toward the end of the first round, Video Research Ltd. said.

The final match, in which Japan defeated Australia, was aired by TV Asahi Corp. and affiliated TV stations between 11:54 p.m. Saturday and 2:40 a.m. Sunday in Japan, the rating agency said.
