U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos "tweeted" for the first time Friday on social network Twitter, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said.

Roos joined Twitter and posted his first message — "Happy to be joining millions of Japanese friends on Twitter!" — on his account from his office in Tokyo, the embassy said.

The ambassador, who assumed the post in August 2009, is planning to share his experiences in Japan on Twitter, according to the embassy.

Among U.S. government officials using Twitter are White House press secretary Robert Gibbs and Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Philip Crowley, the embassy said.
