LONDON (Kyodo) A house and an elementary school have won awards for outstanding designs that serve as next-generation standards in the world of architecture, organizers of the Leaf Awards said Friday.

Designed by Mount Fuji Architects Studio, the house in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, was given the single-occupancy Residential Building of the Year award, while the private Nanasawa Kibo no Oka Elementary School in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, designed by Ben Nakamura, earned the Best Sustainable Development prize.

It is the first time that multiple divisions of the awards, organized by a forum of European architects, have gone to buildings in Japan.
