A 23-year-old woman was arrested in Nagoya on Sunday morning after allegedly stabbing an 81-year-old woman to death at a subway station in the city, local police said.

The victim was identified as Toshi Okuda, a Nagoya resident. Although her condition was initially reported as not life-threatening, she died shortly after being taken to the hospital.

Police declined to identify the suspect, who had been seen speaking gibberish at the station.

The police said they got an emergency call just before 8 a.m. saying a woman had attacked a passerby with a knife at Kanayama Station.

Station staffers said the woman allegedly slashed Okuda in a restroom and then chased her and slashed her again after Okuda managed to escape.

The assailant started crying after she was subdued by a station employee, who then handed her over to the police.
