Southern All Stars frontman Keisuke Kuwata has had surgery for esophagus cancer, the management company for the singer-songwriter said Wednesday.

The surgery ended successfully and Kuwata, 54, is in good condition "to the surprise of the doctor in charge of him," according to a Web site article posted by Amuse Inc., which does not say when or how the surgery was performed.

On July 28, the company said Kuwata had early stage esophagus cancer and would cancel his nationwide concert tour, which was scheduled to start Oct. 28, and would delay the release of his new solo album beyond the originally scheduled launch date of Oct. 20.

Kuwata needs to remain hospitalized for two to three weeks, the company said.
