MILAN (Kyodo) The renowned Tokyo Ballet, founded in 1964, has put on its 700th overseas performance at La Scala theater in Milan, Italy, a record number staged by a Japanese troupe overseas.

The Tokyo Ballet on Sunday performed "The Kabuki," an original piece by the late French choreographer Maurice Bejart. Its landmark stage performance involved about 70 dancers.

"The 700th (performance) is just a point of passage," said Munetaka Iida, artistic director, who is accompanying the troupe. "We will continue to do our best with the aim of reaching the 1,000 mark."

The Tokyo Ballet has performed in more than 30 countries since its first overseas show in 1966 in the Soviet Union.
