Ogasawaras studied as heritage site

Conservationists began studying the natural environment of the Ogasawara islands Friday, a process necessary for the island group to be reviewed for World Natural Heritage designation.

Members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature received lectures from Environment Ministry officials about the characteristics of the islands and measures taken to preserve their unique ecosystems. They are scheduled to conduct field studies from Sunday to July 13.

The Ogasawara archipelago of more than 30 subtropical and tropical islands 1,000 km south of Tokyo is often compared to the Galapagos Islands because it was never connected to a continent.
