Opposition lawmakers Saturday renewed their criticism of Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa as prosecutors questioned him over a political funds scandal, with one calling for him to resign as a Diet member.

Lawmakers in the ruling bloc, meanwhile, expressed hope that the DPJ bigwig will give a full account of the case, with some characterizing the day's developments as a step forward.

"The long process of unraveling (the scandal) has begun," said Sadakazu Tanigaki, president of the Liberal Democratic Party, the largest opposition force. "This is an issue of trust between the people and politics," he said at a party meeting, reiterating calls for Ozawa to be summoned to a Diet meeting as a witness.
