The Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it has not received any reports of Japanese casualties in the powerful earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday.

"Japan would like to implement possible and effective support for the people of Haiti as soon as we find out what is specifically needed," foreign press secretary Kazuo Kodama said in a statement, in which he also expressed his deep sorrow over the disaster.

The statement also said that as of Oct. 1, there were 20 Japanese, including embassy officials, registered as living in the country, and the ministry is currently working to confirm their safety.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck Tuesday afternoon, leading to the collapse of large buildings with thousands of people possibly buried in the rubble.
