CAIRO (Kyodo) Comedian Kanpei Hazama crossed the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul from the European side Monday, entering Asia about one year after departing Osaka last December on a jogging-and-sailing trip around the world.

"I was really supported by various people. Thank you," Hazama said, welcomed by Istanbul citizens and Japanese living there.

The veteran 60-year-old endurance runner left Japan last Dec. 17 on his Earth Marathon, covering 20,000 km on land and 16,000 km at sea.

Hazama first ran to Kamogawa, Chiba Prefecture, then set sail for Los Angeles by yacht on Jan. 1. He arrived in Los Angeles on March 10 and reached Manhattan on July 8.

He sailed from New York's Hudson River across the Atlantic and reached Le Havre, France, about one month later. Hazama arrived in Turkey on Dec. 6 via Bulgaria.
