Five of Japan’s top six banks posted net profits for the April-September period amid the easing of the global downturn, although three of them saw profits decline from a year earlier, according to their financial results released Friday.

Mizuho Financial Group Inc., the nation’s second-largest banking group by assets, reported a group net profit of ¥87.81 billion for the first half of business 2009, which ends next March, down 7.1 percent from a year earlier.
