National Personnel Authority President Masahito Tani submitted his letter of resignation Aug. 11 apparently because he opposed planned wage cuts for government employees, the NPA revealed Thursday, adding the Cabinet is expected to accept his exit Friday.

Tani is stepping down because the pay cuts are proceeding, and the authority has submitted this year's salary and bonus recommendations, it said.

Tani sparked controversy after refusing to send personnel to a government meeting on reforms to the national public service system in January.

He opposed the Cabinet's initiative to integrate some functions of the organization into a new body called the Cabinet Personnel and Administrative Management Bureau.
