The Democratic Party of Japan is maintaining a clear lead over the Liberal Democratic Party among voters with less than a month to go before the election, according to the latest Kyodo News survey.

In a nationwide telephone poll Saturday and Sunday, 34.4 percent of respondents said they will vote for the DPJ in the proportional representation section, up from 30.7 percent a week earlier, while 16.7 percent said they will vote for the LDP, up slightly from 15.6 percent.

Of the other respondents, 37.6 percent said they have not yet decided which party to vote for, compared with 37.4 percent a week ago.

Support has remained steady at above 30 percent for the DPJ and around 15 percent for the LDP throughout Kyodo's weekly polls ahead of the Aug. 30 Lower House election. The latest survey was the first since the DPJ and LDP announced their campaign platforms.
