Seven-Eleven Japan Co. will effectively allow franchise stores to sell boxed lunches and other food products close to their expiration at discount prices, accepting a Fair Trade Commission order to stop barring such sales, according to sources.
The antimonopoly watchdog’s order in June came amid calls from franchise operators to allow the discount sales and growing criticism over the mass disposal of near-expired products.
