Two mountain climbers missing since Friday were found dead Monday at the foot of a precipice in the city of Inabe, Mie Prefecture.

The two are Masashi Kaigawa, a 67-year-old resident of the city of Kitanagoya, Aichi Prefecture, and Yaeko Naganuma, a 56-year-old resident of the city of Miyoshi, also in Aichi.

They were found beside a stream running about 20 meters below a mountain trail.

The two did not respond to calls made by police during a helicopter rescue attempt. They were pronounced dead at a hospital after being airlifted out, police said.

The two climbers started their climb Friday.
