KATMANDU (Kyodo) A Japanese trekker identified as Retsumi Ichihara, 67, died Thursday of altitude sickness in Nepal's Solukhumbu district, the home of Mount Everest, district police said Friday.

"The trekker was found dead in the bathroom of River Resort Guest House in Khumjung village, located at 3,700 meters above sea level, early Thursday morning," said officer Rohit Bhujel from the Namche Police Office, the post nearest to the guest house.

The postmortem report says he died of altitude sickness," Bhujel said over the telephone.

Ichihara was part of a group of 12 Japanese, accompanied by five Nepali guides, exploring the district's midrange areas.
