A Tokyo man has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death of his 92-year-old grandmother, who died after he left her alone in the bathtub of their home, police said Sunday.

The police allege Takayuki Iijima, 23, left his grandmother, Mine Iijima, in the bathtub for about 3 1/2 hours Saturday, fully aware that she could not get out without assistance.

He has admitted to the allegation, the police said. Mine Iijima lived with her grandson and his mother in Suginami Ward.

Teen killed by mom

FUKUSHIMA (Kyodo) A 51-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of killing her 13-year-old son at their home in Aizubange, Fukushima Prefecture, police said.

The police received a call at around 10:15 a.m. Saturday from a hospital in the city of Aizuwakamatsu saying they had a patient claiming she had killed her son. When police arrived at the woman's home they found Yusuke Obata dead with strangulation marks on his neck from a cord.

His mother, Chikako Obata, was taken to the hospital after suffering minor injuries in a car accident, the police said.

She told the police she was distraught about the future because her son was often ill and that she had tried to kill herself in the accident.
