NEC LCD Technologies Ltd. plans to shutter its liquid crystal display factory in Kagoshima Prefecture and transfer some 370 employees to a factory in Akita Prefecture in December, officials at parent NEC Corp. said Wednesday.
NEC Corp. is being forced to cut LCD production for industrial and medical machines due to the recession. Other electronics makers, including Panasonic Corp. and Sony Corp., have also decided to close some domestic production facilities.
NEC officials said employees from the Kagoshima factory who refuse to be transferred to Akita may be asked to quit the Kawasaki-based unit, which has a total workforce of some 1,200.
