Sharp Corp. said Monday it's contesting a fine levied by the antimonopoly watchdog over liquid crystal displays sold to Nintendo Co. for the hit DS portable game machine.

Sharp filed a complaint Monday with the Fair Trade Commission, saying it finds "unacceptable" the commission's Dec. 18 order for a ¥261 million fine.

The FTC says Sharp violated antimonopoly laws by exchanging information with Hitachi Displays Ltd. before selling displays to Nintendo. Sharp denies it has exchanged information with Hitachi.

The hand-held DS machines have been a big hit. Nintendo expects to ship 31.5 million globally during the business year through March.
