The Tokyo Metropolitan Government conducted earthquake drills for foreign residents Tuesday, drawing participation from embassies, students and salaried employees.

The drills, held at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Shibuya Ward and other places, were based on the premise of a quake measuring at least lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 striking the northern part of Tokyo Bay.

The step "is intended to have foreign residents experience Japanese drills," an official said. "We'd like them to be prepared for a quake."

The drills included the use of police dogs to search under rubble and making stretchers from blankets. Bilingual Japanese volunteers helped foreigners.
