The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry wants to require companies to collect used mobile phones to help Japan’s efforts to secure precious metals, officials said Tuesday.

Cell phones and other electronics products are being likened to “urban mines” because they are embedded with precious or rare metals, including gold, silver, nickel and lithium.
