NARA (Kyodo) A freelance journalist admitted Wednesday that a psychiatrist was the source of the information she used in her story about a 2006 arson fire in Nara Prefecture in which three family members of the teenage alleged perpetrator died.

Journalist Atsuko Kusanagi told the Nara District Court what had been widely suspected — that psychiatrist Morimitsu Sakihama leaked investigative records on the teen, who torched his home in the town of Tawaramoto in June 2006, killing his mother, younger brother and sister. Sakihama is on trial for leaking the information.

In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
