SHIZUOKA (Kyodo) A 46-year-old homeless man was arrested Friday for allegedly stealing New Year's cards delivered to another person's home in Fuji, Shizuoka Prefecture, police said.

"I wanted to see printed family photos of other people to avoid feeling the loneliness of my homeless life alone," Masahiko Yamada was quoted as saying by police.

Yamada is suspected of pilfering 21 cards from the mailbox of a 46-year-old company employee at around noon. A neighbor called the police to report "a suspicious person."

Yamada had around 450 New Year's cards addressed to 34 different households and told police he had stolen them from neighborhood homes.
