SAGA (Kyodo) A 61-year-old gangster pleaded guilty Monday to fatally shooting a hospital inpatient in Saga Prefecture in November after mistaking him for an underworld rival he was targeting.

Fumio Imada, a member of Dojin-kai, told the Saga District Court that he "wants to apologize" to the victim and his family.

Imada stands accused of breaking into the Shinoda Orthopedic Clinic in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, on the morning of Nov. 8, and firing two shots at Hiroshi Miyamoto, a 34-year-old sheet metal worker who was asleep in bed on the second floor of the clinic.

Imada mistook Miyamoto for a member of a rival gang. Imada escaped from the scene after shooting Miyamoto, but police tracked him down from an image of him on a hospital security video.
