Toyota Motor Corp. started selling Wednesday new versions of the Noah and Voxy minivans to lure buyers as the domestic market contracts.

The automaker expects to sell 5,000 of each model a month in Japan, it said in a statement. The vehicles, equipped with 2-liter engines, are priced between 2 million yen and 2.66 million yen.

The revamp of the minivans follows the release earlier this month of the Premio and Allion sedans as the carmaker tries to grab market share. President Katsuaki Watanabe aims to raise sales by 2.8 percent in Japan, where total vehicle sales fell for the 23rd straight month in May.

Japan has one of the world's shortest product cycles, with new models providing sales boosts for less than a year, according to analysts.
