YOKOHAMA – A 29-year-old man was arrested Sunday for allegedly stealing a car and later abandoning it after finding two sleeping children in the back seat.
Police said Tomokazu Tagawa, a corporate employee, stole the car at a Lawson convenience store in Hodogaya Ward, Yokohama, at 2 a.m., Kanagawa police said.
“I never thought children were inside. I just wanted a car to get home,” Tagawa reportedly told police.
The car’s 26-year-old owner was in the store with his wife and an 8-month-old son.
A daughter, 6, and son, 5, were asleep in the car.
The parents left the key in the car and did not lock the doors, the police said.
The car was found about 35 minutes later. The children were still asleep.
