A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after a fire door fell on him Wednesday at a Niigata Prefecture elementary school during a systems check, police said.

The accident occurred at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, when the first-grader at Muramatsu Elementary School in Gosen was playing on a hallway, police said.

The boy's neck was stuck between the floor and the fire door between the gymnasium and a classroom building. The boy fell into a coma after he was taken to hospital.

When the accident occurred, the fire door system had been deactivated because two engineers were checking a fire-alarm system, police said.

They are investigating whether the check caused the partition to fall.
