The amount of snow in Tsunan, Niigata Prefecture, surpassed 4 meters on Sunday for the first time since the Meteorological Agency started observations in the city in 1989, officials said.

Tsunan's 416 cm of snow also marks the first time in 25 years that any place in the prefecture has surpassed the 4-meter mark since Uonuma recorded 463 cm in February 1981.

Mogami, Yamagata Prefecture, has had 203 cm of snow, breaking its previous record of 195 cm in February 1994.

More than 20 cities have logged record snowfall this winter, the Meteorological Agency said.
