The University of Tokyo recently took the unprecedented step of virtually closing the laboratory of professor Kazunari Taira for allegedly fabricating a scientific paper.
The top-flight university has slammed Taira's work, saying, "The experiment results cannot be reproduced and are tantamount to a fabrication."
University officials began an investigation into his experiments -- which were aimed at leading to development of cancer and other drugs, and were carried out using a massive amount of public money -- after receiving complaints from researchers overseas.
