An self-styled acupuncturist and his assistant were arrested Wednesday for allegedly practicing medicine without a license in Tokyo, police said.

Arrested were Toshio Gonda, 46, owner of a "clinic" in Sumida Ward, and assistant Ken Kuriyama, 32.

The clinic is said to have attracted around 3,000 clients and generated about 80 million yen in annual revenue over the past several years, according to investigators.

Police said Gonda admitted the pair conducted medical tests on eight people between June 2003 and February 2005 to issue diagnostic documents and offered medical services, including drawing blood, even though both were unlicensed.

While none of the clients became sick as a result of their activities, the diagnostic documents did not make medical sense, police said.
