A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook central Japan on Wednesday evening, but there was no danger of a tsunami, the Meteorological Agency said.
The quake, which struck at 8:36 p.m., was centered about 110 km below ground in northwestern Chiba Prefecture, according to the agency.
It was powerful enough to sway buildings in Tokyo, but there was no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
NHK said train services in Kanagawa prefecture were temporarily halted for safety checks, but high-speed trains linking the capital and other parts of Japan were not affected.
