NEW YORK (Kyodo) Jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, along with the world renowned Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, will hold a four-day residency at Yokohama's Minato Mirai Hall next week, officials said Tuesday.
In addition to showcasing the big band in a series of performances, they will also offer master classes, workshops, collaborations and band clinics for schoolchildren and local adult musicians from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.
The New York orchestra, which last visited Japan eight years ago, will first perform a small group concert performance on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. That will be followed on Feb. 1 by two afternoon "Jazz for Young People" concerts and student clinics.
After performing again on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., the orchestra will offer master classes on Feb. 3 in the afternoon.
Hailed as "an extraordinarily versatile orchestra," the LCJO consists of 15 of jazz music's leading soloists.
The group's musical director, internationally recognized trumpeter Marsalis, has recorded more than 30 jazz and classical recordings and won nine Grammy awards during his career.
Their extensive repertoire includes original compositions by Marsalis, pieces by some of the other orchestra members, and the masterworks of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charles Mingus and other greats spanning the history of the American art form.
