A law enactd in July aimed at improving children's eating habits has triggered moves in the domestic food industry to enlighten youngsters on what constitutes a healthy diet.

While Japan boasts the longest life expectancy in the world, the proliferation of unbalanced diets and irregular eating habits have led to a rise in obesity and related ills.

On the other side of the spectrum, an obsession with being slim, or simply being in too much of a hurry, has resulted in many people -- especially younger generations -- skipping breakfast, dieting excessively and engaging in other unhealthy habits, experts say.
