A man broke into a home and then a coffee shop in Yao, Osaka Prefecture, on Sunday afternoon and stabbed three woman, one of whom died soon after, police said.

The suspect, identified as Masao Shogaki, a 67-year-old unemployed man, first broke into the home of Mitsue Baba, 69, and stabbed her in the chest, while her housemate Satoko Osawa, 53, was also injured but not critically, police said.

The suspect then went to a coffee shop in the neighborhood and stabbed the owner, Aiko Nakano, 57, in the left arm, they said. Shogaki was arrested at the coffee shop.

He was quoted as telling police he was angry because he had been spoken ill of.

According to investigators, Shogaki knew all three women.
