BEIJING (Kyodo) Japanese record company Avex Inc. has signed an agreement with a Chinese wireless service provider to offer music via China's mobile phones, a publicist for the wireless provider said Thursday.

Avex signed a "strategic alliance agreement" with Linktone Ltd. of Shanghai earlier this week to play Japanese pop tunes as mobile phone ring tones, interactive voice responses and ring-back services, Linktone said in a statement. Images of music stars will also be available by mobile phone.

About 6.9 million Chinese mobile subscribers used Linktone services in the first quarter of 2004 and could receive the music from Avex. Japanese pop songs are especially popular in Shanghai and Guangdong Province, the publicist said.
