NTT DoCoMo Inc. saw the biggest net subscription growth in the domestic mobile phone market in June, surpassing that of KDDI Corp. for the first time since September, an industry association said Wednesday.

NTT DoCoMo posted a net increase of 166,300 subscriptions -- or new subscriptions minus cancellations -- in June, capitalizing on strong demand for its FOMA third-generation mobile phone service, the Telecommunications Carriers Association said.

KDDI's au service trailed NTT DoCoMo, logging a net gain of 157,500 subscriptions, due to a month-on-month fall in subscriptions to its third-generation system.

Vodafone K.K., which registered its smallest-ever net subscription increase of 17,700 in May, added 64,100 to its service in June.

The total number of subscriptions to mobile phone services in Japan totaled 82,713,900 at the end of June, up 0.5 percent from a month earlier.
