West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) said Tuesday it has uncovered 621 cases of fabricated records dating back as far as March 2000.

Most of the false reports stated that regular inspections of tunnels and bridges had been conducted along the Sanyo Shinkansen Line and conventional train lines.

JR West said there were many cases in which officials forgot to conduct inspections or failed to do so within the designated time. In one case, inspections had been behind schedule for 223 days.

Company insiders leaked revelations about similar coverups in May.

JR West plans to reprimand more than 10 people but said the fabrications involving its branch offices in Okayama, Okayama Prefecture, and Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, did not affect train operations.
