A former head of the financial bureau of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryun) was sentenced to six years in prison Friday for embezzling 837 million yen from the failed Chogin Tokyo Credit Union.

The Tokyo District Court found Kang Young Kwan, 69, guilty of embezzling the money from the now-defunct Chogin Tokyo Credit Union on 13 occasions between 1994 and 1998.

The credit union collapsed in 1999.

Prosecutors had sought a seven-year prison term for Kang, who pleaded not guilty.
