The government will expand steps to help small and midsize companies that could be affected by the import ban on U.S. beef over mad cow disease, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Tuesday.

METI said it will activate safety net insurance covered by credit-guarantee associations across the county, under which small companies in need of cash can receive loans of up to 200 million yen until June 23.
