Japan and Germany agreed Wednesday to cooperate on training Iraqi police in the United Arab Emirates.

Yukio Okamoto, a diplomatic adviser to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi who is visiting Germany, told a news conference after talks with German and French officials that Japan also agreed with France to assist Iraqi athletes trying to participate in the upcoming Athens Olympics.

Tokyo will send trainers and equipment to the UAE when Germany sends about 150 police officers there to train Iraqi police.

Okamoto said Japan, France and Germany also agreed to set up a policy coordination body in Amman to share information on reconstruction work in Iraq.

He said he asked the two countries to support Tokyo's planned project to provide training assistance to Iraqi doctors in Egypt. The French and German officials expressed interest and agreed to continue looking into the plan. Former Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto visited the countries in December, when it was agreed that Japan, France and Germany would cooperate in Iraq's reconstruction.
