The Japan External Trade Organization said Monday it will invite about 10 Iraqi oil engineers for a one-month training program that will begin in late February at the earliest.

The engineers from Iraq's Oil Ministry will be shown how to evaluate crude oil reserves and types so as to decipher whether oil drilling will be profitable, the semigovernmental organization said.

A computer training program will also be offered, it said.

The move follows a request made to the Japanese government in October, JETRO said.

It will be the first time for Japan to accept trainees from Iraq since 1990, when that country invaded neighboring Kuwait, JETRO officials said.
