Shipments of personal computers in Japan in 2003 dropped for the third consecutive year in terms of value despite the first upturn in two years in volume, an industry association said Thursday.

The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said PC shipments dropped 4 percent to 1.61 trillion yen while increasing 5 percent to 10,562,000 units.

The decline in value came amid higher price competitiveness of PCs in a year when consumer interest focused on such home digital products as flat-screen TVs, digital cameras and DVD recorders.
