If Casio Computer Co. has its way, the heavy paper dictionary will be a thing of the past for most consumers.

On Aug. 1, Casio Computer debuted the EX-Word, an electronic device containing 32 dictionaries. The Tokyo-based company, which makes digital cameras and electronic dictionaries, claims it is the greatest number of dictionaries available in a single unit.

The EX-Word includes English-Japanese, Japanese-English, Japanese-Spanish, Japanese-German, Japanese-French and Japanese-Italian dictionaries, as well as those dealing with kanji, speech examples, information technology terms, medical knowledge and legal terms.
